I recently read Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. It's on next year's TAYSHAS list. It's about a girl who can see fairies. Apparently, they're all around us but most of us can't see them. And these fairies aren't anything like Tinkerbell. Many of them are the same size as humans and they can be pretty obnoxious. Anyway, the Summer King wants her to become his bride, but she just wants a normal life (college, boyfriend, etc.), so she wrestles with choosing between her desires and her destiny. It's a great fantasy book with a dose of romance.
I will admit my vise, The Royal Treatment is a fiction based on the idea "What would happen if Alaska had not been purchased from Russia?" It is a romance based on the alaskan royal family. Really good, and the main character thinks like me! :-)
i am a huge rachel cohn & Laurie Halse Anderson fan yall recently got in a book by anderson called twisted i read it over the summer it was awesome. here are a few other good ones The Perks of being a wall flower My Road trip To the pretty girl captal of the world* it was wrote about austin* It's kind of a funny story Smack King dork ect. all of these are really good
Ok, I just read my first book that is written in poetry form, "What My Girlfriend Doesn't Know" by Sonya Sones. OMG! It was so good! I don't know why it took me so long to read a book like that! Anyone else read any good books written like that?
If you like historical fiction "The Book Thief" is perfect! It looks at WW2 from the perspective of a German girl growing up. Looking through her eyes and seeing what is happening is a very interesting and different view on that time. It is a fiction, but written with depth and many facts throughout. I enjoied it, and I hope you do too!
Anyone ever heard of a book called The Looking Glass Wars? The tagline is really good, "fantasy just declared war on reality". It says that Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland is just a myth, that Wonderland is real, and Alyss Heart is the heir to the throne. Unfortunately, her aunt Redd (yes, that's how you spell it.) want's the throne and trys to kill all of Alyss' family so she escapes into our world. The second book, Seeing Redd just came out. (I haven't read it yet though.)
The Book Thief is incredible!! I listened to it on audio and the narrator had a great voice. The book is narrated by Death. I know it sounds weird, but it works. It deals with WWII and the Halocaust so it's very serious, but it's very unique.
I've read 'The Book Thief', and I really didn't get it. I stopped reading it about half-way through because it was so bizzare. It was written well, but the premise was really weird.
Steve Martin's The Pleasure Of My Company was a truly amazing book. I can't really give it justice in this form. The best I can do is tell you to check it out. Just do it.
im currently reading Sweeny Todd, Demon Barber of fleet street, and its a great clasic, if u want a book with rich detail and marvelous plot then you have to read it!!!!!
Ok, I'm listening to "The Book Thief" on audio book right now. It's really hard to follow, but maybe that's because I'm not actually reading it...or maybe because I'm listening to it while I'm running. I dunno. I'll let you know if it gets better...I'm only on chapter 4.
I just picked up the latest book in a series by Lynn Viehl. The book is the fifth installment in the series and so good that I can't put it down. The whole series is about vampires but with a twist. The restrictions are different and the creation of the vampire or vrykolakas, as they prefer to call themselves. It's a really good series for whoever wants a drastic twist on the old tale of the vampire.
This is my first post and I wanted to follow up with your comments about The Book Thief! I read it several months ago and consider it the best novel I've read in a long time - I thought having Death as the narrator was awesome - Death became a character you could empathize with. And...the novel gave me a different perspective on WWII from other books I have read.
This past week I read 2 books that are take offs on fairy tales - Beastly and If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince. This type of book isn't usually my favorite so I was surprised how much I enjoyed them. Beastly tells the tale of a young man's transformation into a "beast", but more importantly it tells of the transformation of his heart and his character! If I Have a Wicked Stepmother has humor while telling the story of 2 families trying to become one!
Okay, to brojac over the Pendragon books, the story's pretty good, but overall, I think the story's kinda generic and unimaginative (no offense!). Oh, and on the other hand, elisto, I LOVE the Looking Glass Wars! Good choice!
Has anyone read Poison Study by Snyder? It is an interesting book set in a fictional military dictatorship. The main character opens with being in prison (she murdered someone) and about to die. She is offered the choice to become the commander's food taster and won't know when or how she will die (or if she can survive the training, ugh! Tasting poisons!). But the premisis is what would you do if you didn't know how, where, or when you were going to die, but were going to die soon. I liked it better then the series that followed, but a great read nonetheless.
